Dr. Amy J. Irwin received her Bachelor's degree from Haverford College in Pennsylvania in 1998 and a Doctorate of Medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. in 2002. While attending Georgetown, she developed the school's first Medical Professionalism Code, served as Class Treasurer and received the University's Sarah Stewart Leadership Award. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2005, where she was awarded the University of Pennsylvania's Holmes Award in Patient Oriented Evaluative Research. Dr. Irwin went on to complete her Hematology/Oncology fellowship in 2008 after returning to Georgetown University Hospital's Lombardi Cancer Center. During her fellowship, she completed a Bone Marrow Transplant rotation at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2007, Georgetown University Hospital's patients honored Dr. Irwin with a Georgetown Shining Star Award to acknowledge her outstanding commitment to patient care. Her research and clinical focus during fellowship was in breast cancer and she is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Irwin's commitment to caring for and treat hematology and oncology patients led her to join the Loudoun and Fairfax offices of Northern Virginia Hematology Oncology in 2008. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Virginia Association of Hematologists and Oncologists, and the American Medical Association. Her interests outside of work include cooking and photography.
